Robert Mugabe has agreed to step down from office and hand over power to another person
- But this has thrown a spanner into the works as he can only hand over to a Vice President who is not there
- Mugabe fired his VP Emmerson Mnangagwa while the current one,his wife Grace, is on the run
Besieged Zimbabwe's strong man Robert Mugabe has finally agreed to hand over power after a day of long deliberations with army generals and envoys from neighboring countries.
But the decision to step down has further complicated the situation as it has thrown the country into a constitutional crisis,sources have told TUKO.co.ke.
The 93-year-old who was removed from power through a bloodless coup whose existence the army has denied is supposed to hand over power to his deputy.
However,Mugabe's number two who is his wife Grace, is on the run following the sudden coup.
"There is a constitutional headache. The constitution states that the VP takes over but at present there is no VP. The first (Emmerson Mnangagwa) was fired and the second (Grace) is on the run. So the military are calling for reinstating of the sacked VP", a source from Harare told TUKO.co.ke on Thursday,November 16.
The military during the deliberations also guaranteed safety of Mugabe's family and protection of his assets.
The military,added the source is trying by all means to avoid getting into a transitional authority.
"They want ZANU PF(the ruling party) alone to rule which will anger the Opposition. However, SADC(Southern Africa Development Community) and president Mugabe wanted to extend to December when ZANU PF has its elective congress,
