Martin Luther Kings (Jr) envisioned a future were there will be absence of oppression of a race by another race. Will the dream becomes a reality or not? This 21st century slavery and oppression of the black has not been pronounced until the recent Lybia Slave trade. Modern Slavery is an economic slavery. It's a situation whereby certain groups of people are held hostage for the purpose of mentary exchange.
The Lybia slave trade occurs when Africans who are caught in the border of Lybia are held hostage by some citizens of Lybia. These African hostages are sold to highly placed people as slaves. Some will be forced to work in the farm, some will be used for medical purposes and some will be conscripted into terrorist groups.
Well, Africans that are being held as slaves in Lybia intends to travel to Europe. Travelling to Europe without a visa will require them to take an illegal routes. This illegal routes is the route that lead to Lybia and the Mediterranean sea. A large numbers of this illegal emigrants are from Africa such as Nigeria, Ghana, Togo etc. In their attempt to cross the Mediterranean sea sometimes many will get drawn. Unfortunately, many caught in the border of Lybia are apprehended and become commodity for slave trade.
This African pligt makes me to sigh painfully with this couplet "
Oh African while will you die
Enslaved and drawn for economic reasons"
I consider this modern slavery in Lybia in two perspectives. One, people who are illegally found in a country should be apprehended. That is a good and lawful step. But the government of the countries should redeploy this illegal immigrants to their various countries. This is legally acceptable and humane. But it will be an inhumane act for this country to hold these illegal foreigners hostage without informing the governments of their countries of their illegal activities in the country.
As the saying goes " Peace is the absence of war". The world bodies are in constant pursuit of policies that will ensure equality and fairness among different countries of the world. Modern slavery is not in line with this world bodies' goal for peaceful coexistence among countries.
Two, every country in Africa should should ensure that in this digitisation age people's movement in and out of the country are monitored. Those passing through illegal routes to Europe can be detected with a good technological database. Through virtual security agents this can be implemented in all African countries. With this approach, it will be made nearly impossible for people to travel to Europe through Lybia.
African countries are increasingly becoming less attractive for its citizens to settle in. This is due to both economic and political problems in African countries. One of the reasons why Africans travel to Europe is to search for a greener pasture. Meanwhile, in some African countries there are neither green pasture nor a greener pasture. The economies of most African countries are less developed and some of the political leaders are not charting the course for economic development. The domestic production base of an economy determine its exchange rate. The values of most Africans currency are low compared to US Dollar and European Euro due the domestic production base of these economies. The aftermath of this is a high percent of unemployment and underemplment.
Problems of unemployment will always trigger the youth to seek for a way out because employment is one of the pillars of survival. Without employment there will be no income and without income there will be no existence.
To solve this problem, African youth resort to travelling to Europe where there are gainful employment opportunities. To do this they have to pass through Lybia through Mediterranean sea to Europe.
Also, politically most of these African countries are not favourable to live in due to political instability. I believe nobody we wish to live in a place of high insecurity. People will always prefer peace to war. This why African youth tends to migrate illegally to Europe and other countries were there are security of life and properties.
in fact, insecurity problems will lead to diversion of capital investment funds to solve security-related issues. Security problem is one of the reasons why the economies of this countries remain stagnant with few improvements.
In this 21st century, slave trade should be barbaric. Issues that should be the attention of world leaders should be digitisation, global warning(climate change management) and sustainable development. The Lybia modern slave trade can be tackled with the following technical recommendations;
Lybia Slave trade is not only an abuse to Africans but an abuse to humanity. This means that the world must stand up to halt the evil against humanity being done in Lybia. According to UN's Migration Agency says "in four years row, 3000 refugees have died while attempting the journey to Europe". The same report had it that "in the last three years 150thousand people from Africa have made the dangerous crossing the Mediterranean Sea from Lybia.
The above reports are bad result in the sense that it showed how African economies have been poor in employment. It also showed the number of people that are being subjected to exploration and slavery by the Lybian. Being that this evil is an evil act against humanity.
World bodies such as the United Nations, African Union, European Economic Countries should rise up against this wickedness. This necessary machinery should be put in place to tackle this 21st century slavery. It's a violation aginst universal human rights. To prove that this world bodies stand for universal human rights they should rise up against this act were humans are used as commodities for exchange.
We should also see that part of the solution to this modern Slavery as a responsibility of African countries that are are affected with this menace. In a town hall meeting in Sandford University by Dr. Strive Masiyiwa said that " job creation by entrepreneurs is what is needed to make illegal journey being embarked by African youth. For people not to embark in this journey jobs must be generated by entrepreneurs in African economies". This means that the government of these countries should make an enabling environments to encourage entrepreneurial activities. This range from infrastructural investment to human capital development investment.
Travelling out of the country will become less-attractive when we have successful entrepreneurs in Africa. We need to build young entrepreneurs to become like Dr. Strive Masiyiwa, Aliko Dangote, Jeff Bensoz, Mark Zuckerberg etc. This guys had created great business that is employing thousands of people.
I have a dream like that of Martin Luther Kings (Jr.)'s " I've a dream that soon modern and 21st century slavery will end. The relevant stakeholders should arise and make this dream comes through.
